I have to learn Spanish because my job involves communicating with people from Latin America. I'm learning mostly from a textbook, but sometimes I watch YouTube videos where people speak Simple Spanish.
Every textbook says that the pronoun *yo* is pronounced /ʝo/ (I copied from website, something like “yoh”)
But every now and then, I get recommended videos of people having conversations on the streets of Spain. And there, like every other person in Barcelona seems to pronounce the first sound more like a “j.” And none of the textbooks ever mention that....
Also, the textbooks never warn you how ridiculously fast people speak Spanish in real life. I can barely make out half the words.
